With the 2023 United Nations Water Conference now underway, a March 22, 2023 article in Nature highlights that around half of the world’s population is already at risk of severe water scarcity for at least some of the year, and with climate change, this is set to get worse.
As this map shows, large parts of the world are now at high or very high risk of drought. This will exacerbate transboundary tensions over water supply:
